Who could cause your business legal problems?

As a business owner, it is important to remain vigilant for signs of trouble. It’s not only economic problems you need to watch for, but legal ones, too.

Unfortunately, the reality is that you could face legal challenges from many directions. Here are some to consider:

From the authorities

If you operate a business, you likely need several licenses and permissions to do so. You also need to comply with requirements, such as filing your tax returns on time or registering certain incidents. Failing to comply with even one small thing could lead to legal issues so be sure to get help to learn about all your obligations if you are unsure.

From the people you deal with

No business operates alone. You will have clients and suppliers upon whom you rely. They will also rely on you for certain things. Usually, these relationships are governed by written contracts that need to be carefully drawn up. If a breach occurs, understanding how best to resolve it can be crucial, and in some cases that may mean taking legal action.

You likely also have employees and you should once again use contracts to govern these relationships. There are also a host of laws you must abide by when employing someone and an inadvertent breach could see you facing a lawsuit.

As you can see, a legal issue could appear over the horizon when you least expect it. Ignorance of an issue is not always an excuse in the eyes of the law, so your best policy is to do your best to stay informed of all your legal obligations. And if a problem does occur, to seek help to learn about your options.
